Off the Beaten Track

Leaving Rogoznica, we did another lunchtime anchorage. We’ve been getting a lot of anchoring practice, and I think we’re getting better. 🙂 This time, Conor even left the boat! He’s been too nervous to leave her without someone on board. It was a big step for him. With mask and fins, he dove down to look at the anchor chain. He thought it was such a thing of beauty, he made all of us check it out too. Instead of the SUP, we just took out one of our floats. The Dublin McGanns called them “lilos,” but Laura wasn’t crazy about that name. Instead she named them Lilo and Stitch.

Back on board, Conor was aiming for the town of Skradin. It is quite inland. In fact, we turned up a river and traversed it for easily an hour and a half. Who knew?! I felt we were “off roading.” It was neat to see different inland sites, and we made it to the ACI Marina Skradin by late afternoon.

We passed the large city of Sibenik. Will have to check it out next time.

We explored the town of Skradin, which we really liked, and even found a neat old fortress. Like most of Croatia we’ve seen, lots of history here with the area being controlled by multiple groups over the years. Skradin is supposed to be one of the oldest towns in Croatia. With a great location on the Krka River and great natural resources, it was even the capital of Croatia and Bosnia at one point.

The next morning, we were all impressed with ourselves as we got up at 7am to head over to the Krka National Park. We were trying to beat some heat and the crowds. It was about an hour-long walk through a beautifully forested trail along the Krka River to the entrance of the park near the waterfalls we wanted to see. We made it to Skradinski buk, the longest fall. We trekked around for awhile then made the hour-long trek back to town. So much variety of flora and fauna, and miles and miles of trails to explore. Beautiful. We’ll have to come back!

Skradinski buk

We left Skradin shortly thereafter as we had a long trek out to our next stop. We were able to raise the sails for a while in addition to the engines and were screaming down river at up to 8.4 knots. Once back at sea, we had up to 25 knots of wind, but we were heading directly into it the whole day. Made for a choppy ride, but nice to know Sabática takes it very well. A quick, uneventful night at Marina Kornati in the town of Biograd na Moru. Don’t need to return here. But after a successful fuel-up, we’re now on our way to Zadar – only a quick two-hour hop up the coast where we’ll be collecting three of Laura’s friends tomorrow. More crew! Though Laura and Rory are doing great getting the hang of fenders, lines, helming, etc.
