Our first truly successful overnight anchorage

As we continue to make our way north we are starting to see more Italian influences – from an Italian restaurant or two to more Italian flagged boats. Our new goal is to reach Venice in about a week. So in the morning after Conor’s safety pitch, off we set…

Our first day was a long seven hour trek through some crazy winds and swell. Winds got up to around 23 knots and our highest speed reached around 8.5 knots. Conor enjoys that, but we did have to pull out the seasickness medicine for the first time for some crew. Everyone was fine.

We can’t now say the same for our sail bag, unfortunately. While we were reefing the main sail, a mishap caused the port side of the sail bag to snap. It was quite a feat to get the main sail contained once we got it down. Conor now has a new repair job, and we’ll stick to just using our jib until the sail bag is fixed. 😉

On a high note, we had quite the treat. Sean traveled with his saxophone and serenaded us with amazing music. I bet we were the only boat in the Adriatic Sea with live sax music!

The day brought us to the island of Mali Lošinj where we found a nice, large anchorage area. It wasn’t completely protected from the winds, but protected enough. It wasn’t possible to tie a line to shore, so we were just going to have to trust the anchor. (No small feat for Conor.) We successfully anchored, Conor got his anchor alarm app set, and the young adults all got to finally jump in for a swim. Beautiful, peaceful cove. We made dinner on the boat and enjoyed the contrast from a marina. I think everyone slept well, including the skipper. That’s a first! So this all bodes well for confidently anchoring overnight again. 😉

Good night!

  1. Hi Lisa,

I’m loving all your posts! What a brilliant time you’re having.

In England at the moment helping my parents after their house move (downsizing)…very hot here!

Not sure your route to Venice, and can’t remember if I mentioned this, but we loved Piran in Slovenia on coast – almost opposite Venice. Great town- almost Venetian with a touch of Tuscany, without the crowds, and lovely marina….

In fact we loved Slovenia in general….

Stay safe and enjoy Venice. My biggest advice there- stay off beaten path, go to Ghetto (Jewish district), pick your restaurants carefully, although food is great if you choose wisely it’s probably the most touristy, expensive, and lots of mediocre eateries.

    Best, Nic
